Labelary and ZPLPreview: choosing a ZPL workflow
Updated November 1, 2026 · ZPLPreview maintenance notes
Labelary provides more than rendering: its viewer has formatting, command help, lint diagnostics, size and density controls. Its API provides PNG/PDF, multi-label output, transformations and data extraction. ZPLPreview uses Labelary for core preview and PDF rendering, so these are shared engine capabilities.
| Task | Labelary | ZPLPreview |
|---|---|---|
| Render and export | Viewer and documented API; custom size and multi-label PDF | Workbenches combining editing, size, preview and export through Labelary |
| Diagnose commands | Lint, command help and support documentation | Separate field, coordinate and structure tools with explicit limits |
| Convert PDF/image | See its current API documentation for supported inputs | Server-side raster conversion to ZPL, page selection, proportional fit and crop |
| Verify scanning | Rendered symbols are not print-quality certification | Structure checks are not decoding or physical scan verification |

Choose 2 × 1 inches and 8 dpmm, render, then change the canvas to 4 × 6 inches. The content remains positioned in dots; the canvas changes. Changing the canvas does not scale every command. Use the DPI conversion tool for a deliberate template migration and check fonts, graphics and barcode modules individually.
Which should you choose?
Use Labelary Viewer or its documented API when you need direct access to that engine. Use ZPLPreview when the combined directory of conversion, templates and inspection tools suits your task. Both still require printer and scanner testing before production.
Data and testing limits
Previewing in ZPLPreview sends ZPL to Labelary through this site's backend. PDF/image conversion uploads source files to this server. We use synthetic examples for engine checks and do not claim hardware certification or affiliation with Zebra or Labelary.
